The quarterly meeting of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council held on September 26, 2008, received a report from Paul Martin, director of the Chattanooga National Cemetery on the space limits of sites available. He said a new survey by the Veterans Affairs office ensured the cemetery would remain open through 2046 with the current parameters.
CAVC Chairman Bill Raines presided over the meeting where by-law plans were discussed to put the organization on a calendar year, instead of beginning in March. It will be discussed at the December 12 meeting with a tentative installation date of January 9.
Mike Bearden was introduced as team leader of the Chattanooga Vet Center, replacing Jim Cecil who stepped down to a counselor's position for reasons of health. Marvin Turner presented information on SCORE, retired executives assisting businesses, saying money was available through the SBA. John Goetz, staff representative for Sen. Bob Corker, attended the meeting.
The organization made plans to purchase additional chairs for the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Currently, they have 600 chairs and it was estimated over 1,000 attended Memorial Day services in May. Veterans Day will be observed at 11 AM on November 11 with VFW Post 3679 the host unit. Memorial Day 2009 will be hosted by Vietnam Veterans Chapter 203.
Mark Parks, CAVC vice chairman, said the USO Dance will be held November 15 at 6:30 PM at Post 95.
Patty Parks asked for volunteers to help with the Medal of Honor Museum, saying the number giving time was so sparse it was impossible to meet all the needs. She said if enough help was not available before the December CAVC meeting she would recommend the museum be relocated to another city.
