George Washington Honor Medal
The George Washington Honor Medal is the highest honor the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge presents. The Chattanooga Chapter of that organization presented it February 8 to Wilkes T. Thrasher Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4848 in ceremonies at the Collegedale City Hall.
The post was chosen from among 247 entries for the 2008 National Awards selection. Post 4848 Commander John Scott accepted the medal presented by Harriet and Winton Harris of the local organization.
Recognition was given for Post 4848’s work on the 2008 Memorial Day ceremony at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The post is a member of the Chattanooga Area Veterans Council, which coordinates veteran activities in the tri-state area.
Ron Williams, CAVC chairman elect, attended the ceremony.
Other awards presented were by Chris McSpadden for the Certificate of Merit Youth Essay, by Julia Olive for the George Washington Honor Medal for the Youth Essay and by Bettye Parker for the George Washington Honor Medal Youth Essay.
Chapter President Esther Taj gave the welcome, with colors presented by the Ooltewah High School Junior ROTC and The National Anthem was sung by Mary Catherine McConnell. Rev. William Waddell gave the invocation.
