Honor Guard

Students from the fifth grade of Battlefield Academy form an honor guard to welcome veterans sharing their memories of experiences in wars from World War II to Iraq.  The veterans met with the students in the elementary school at Main and Market streets following Veterans Day services at the National Cemetery November 11, 2008.

Veterans share wartime experiences

Veterans sharing their experiences were Noah Long--Vietnam War, Bill Lockery--Vietnam War, Shields Wilson--World War II, Bob Walravin--World War II, Bill Bubb--Korean War, Bill Raines--Vietnam War and Desert Shield and Roger Hankin--Iraq Conflict.

Students at Battlefield Academy were captivated by their guest speakers, veterans who told of their wartime experiences ranging from World War II to Iraq following Veterans Day observance at the National Cemetery November 11, 2008.  Discussions ranged from how Japan began World War II to the action in Iraq.  Memorabilia brought by the veterans fascinated the students.  There was a World War II helmet, part of a web belt and a soldier's ration kit.  Responsible questions brought on the subject of the morality of dropping the atomic bomb, with the explanation by a veteran preparing to invade Japan who said it saved a million lives, Japanese as well as American.  After the discussion, the youngsters rushed to the table to be close to the veterans and touch the artifacts they brought.
